APA Update: Major 2024 Accomplishments!

02/04/2024

BY LYNN MARCUS, PRESIDENT

In 2024, we fielded requests for services in 60 cases involving 118 people from 20 countries. We filed or completed and helped people file 13 asylum applications, 9 court motions, 7 applications for Temporary Protected Status, 7 applications for work authorization, and three miscellaneous filings. Our main volunteer lawyer appeared as a “Friend of the Court” at four hearings.

We provided funds for representation in 8 cases (for 9 people) and arranged for pro bono representation in 3 other cases.

We were able to obtain dismissals or closures in several cases, either because they involved unaccompanied minors whose cases were sent to a non-adversarial setting (for interviews) or because the individuals obtained Temporary Protected Status.

June of 2024, an immigration judge granted asylum to a man from Chad whose case the APA helped fund in 2023. The man had been detained and severely beaten for days after participating in a peaceful protest. He later participated in another protest but had to flee because the military killed hundreds of protestors and were looking for him.
